Fairmont Fire Department Station No. 2
The Fairmont Fire Station was designed to replace the City of Fairmont’s more than 100-year-old East Side station with a modern public safety facility capable of supporting current operations and future growth. OMNI Associates – Architects was selected through a competitive process to provide planning and architectural design services as well as pre-development site selection.
OMNI worked closely with the City of Fairmont and the Fire Department to develop a facility centered on operational efficiency, firefighter health and safety, and improved emergency response. Careful programming established functional relationships between critical areas of the station, including convenient access between the sleeping quarters and apparatus bays.
The apparatus bays were designed to accommodate future growth, with capacity for a ladder truck and ambulance. Enhanced health and safety features include a dedicated decontamination area, hose storage, and a complete vehicle exhaust system within the apparatus bay.
The Fairmont Fire Station also establishes clearly defined public and private areas. The private firefighter living and operations spaces accommodate four firefighters across three shifts and include individual bunk rooms for each shift, a training room, exercise room, locker room, kitchen, and day room.
Together, these spaces provide firefighters with a functional environment for training, daily operations, equipment maintenance, and rest while maintaining separation from public areas of the facility.
The completed station provides the East Side of Fairmont with a modern facility designed around the needs of its firefighters and the community they serve. Its flexible apparatus spaces and carefully planned operational areas also allow the facility to adapt as the department’s needs evolve.
The project was recognized by AIA West Virginia with a Merit Award for Achievement in Architecture.
