Riverview at Clendenin School transformed a historic former school into a mixed-use community facility providing affordable senior housing and healthcare services in Clendenin, West Virginia. Completed in 2011, the adaptive reuse project gave the existing building a new purpose while preserving an important piece of the community’s history.

The renovated facility combines two primary uses under one roof: a nonprofit community health center and 18 units of safe, affordable housing for seniors. Bringing residential and healthcare services together created a unique environment designed to support the needs of the surrounding community.

The health center includes a range of services within the restored building, including dental care, radiology, a pharmacy, and physical therapy. These services provide residents and members of the surrounding community with convenient access to healthcare while allowing the historic structure to continue serving a meaningful public purpose.

Riverview at Clendenin School was made possible through a combination of local, state, and federal funding sources. Funding included support through the West Virginia Neighborhood Stabilization Program and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as well as financing from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state and federal historic tax credits.

The project demonstrates how historic preservation and adaptive reuse can extend the life of an existing community landmark while responding to contemporary housing and healthcare needs.

Riverview at Clendenin School was recognized by the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia for its successful rehabilitation and use of historic tax credits, receiving recognition for Best Use of Tax Credits and historic preservation.
