West Virginia University’s Ruby Memorial Hospital Expansion
The WVU Hospitals North & Northeast Additions expanded critical healthcare space in Morgantown, West Virginia. The project formed an important part of the hospital’s overall master plan. OMNI Associates – Architects provided full architectural services for the $39 million expansion.
The North Addition added two stories and approximately 40,000 square feet to the existing hospital. The fifth floor includes a new surgical suite with six operating rooms. OMNI also planned space for four future operating rooms to support continued growth.
On the sixth floor, the project expanded the Biomedical Engineering area and added staff offices. These improvements provided more space for important hospital operations and support services.
The eight-story Northeast Addition added approximately 125,000 square feet. This expansion allowed several existing hospital departments to grow. It also created space for new healthcare services.
The Northeast Addition includes larger shipping and receiving areas as well as new conference rooms. In addition, the project expanded critical care services with an Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
The project also created a new Skilled Nursing Unit and Long Term Acute Care Hospital. Together, these areas added 82 patient rooms. OMNI also incorporated space for future expansion as the hospital’s needs continue to change.
Overall, the WVU Hospitals North & Northeast Additions encompass 180,800 square feet of new and expanded space. The design strengthens surgical, critical care, patient care, and hospital support services within the campus.
OMNI delivered the project through a design-bid-build process. Completed in 2016, the expansion provides WVU Hospitals with additional capacity while supporting future growth.
